I’m just starting to get up to speed on XMPP, which is an open source technology at the heart of Google Wave. It seems likely to be at the center of the new, Twitter-inspired race for real-time everything (search, publishing, GPS coordinates, etc). XMPP is, as far I understand, a much smarter, more active version of RSS and has been powering Jabber and Google Talk for years. I’ve heard a couple CTOs recently talk about the rebirth (for real this time) of push. But the old push technologies were fragmented and impossible to work with; XMPP seems to be the opposite.
From the exec director of the XMPP foundation, Peter Saint-Andre:
Those in the know have long realized that XMPP can be used for much more than basic IM. The power of XMPP comes from the fact that in essence it is really just a way to quickly and securely deliver small pieces of structured information from one entity to another over the Internet.
If you’re working on anything interesting using XMPP (or if you think I’m way off track), let me know.
