I’ve got a bad feeling that as more and more electric (and hybrid electric) cars debut, there’s going to be a race to deliver fancifully high MPG figures. It’ll be the auto equivalent of the sunscreen companies trumpeting astronomical SPFs or camera makers touting 6-billion megapixel lenses. Already Nissan is promoting its 2010 all-electric car, the Leaf, as getting 367 MPG.At some point, the numbers are meaningless; the only thing that matters is that the cars are cheap to operate. I also think talking about MPG is going to confuse consumers who wonder why they’re worrying about gas efficiency for cars that don’t use gas.
The NYT story notes, by the way, that the EPA “could not vouch for the accuracy of G.M.’s figure.”
